"2.9% + 30¢" Is Not the Whole Bill. Here's What Stripe Really Takes.

The headline rate vs. the effective rate

Stripe's standard online rate: 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge. Because the $0.30 is flat, small orders get hammered:

Order sizeFeeEffective %
$5$0.4458.9%
$10$0.595.9%
$25$1.0254.1%
$50$1.753.5%
$100$3.203.2%
$500$14.803.0%

The flat 30¢ dominates below ~$20. That's why a $5 product with a $100 average order value feel is a different business than a $5 one-off.

The add-ons that push the real number higher

  • International cards: +1%
  • Currency conversion: +1% (if you display/charge in a different currency)
  • Refunds: the original processing fee is kept by Stripe; you refund the customer but don't get the fee back (only the refund is reversed).
  • Chargebacks/disputes: $15 per dispute (waived only on certain plans/low volumes).
  • Instant payouts: +1.5% of the payout amount if you can't wait 2 days.
  • Link / one-click checkout: same rate, no surcharge — a genuine plus for conversion.

A $40 order from a UK buyer paid in a foreign currency, then refunded: 2.9%+30¢ + 1% intl + 1% FX ≈ $2.02 on $40 (~5%) — and you keep the fee even after refunding the $40.

When the 2.9% story changes

  • High ticket ($1,000+): negotiate volume pricing; the flat fee is negligible and the % is everything. Stripe's custom/enterprise pricing kicks in at real scale.
  • In-person (card-present): Stripe Terminal is cheaper (~2.7% + 5¢) because swiped cards carry less fraud risk.
  • Micro-transactions ($1-$3): Stripe's pricing is brutal here. Consider a payment-processor with a lower flat fee, or bundle orders.

The 3 things to actually do

  1. Raise your minimum order or AOV. If average order is $8, the flat fee is your biggest cost — fix by bundling or a $15 minimum, not by switching gateways.
  2. Price international shipping to cover the +1-2%. Cross-border sales eat the extra points.
  3. Use refunds sparingly on tiny orders. Refunding $8 means you paid ~$0.59 to make $0. Consider a "keep it, here's a partial credit" policy.
At $100 average order, Stripe is roughly 3.2% — fine. At $8, it's ~6.6% — a silent business-killer. Don't chase a cheaper logo on a low-AOV store; raise your average order value and the fee problem mostly disappears.
